HD displays are getting more and more common on high end tablets, most recent processors easily cope with 1080p video content (1920×1080, Blu-ray Disc type resolution) but few of them are capable of playing content in higher definitions.
We have tested 4K UHD (Ultra High Definition) or 2160p content video play on latest Google Nexus 10 tablet and an Onda V812, a cheap Chinese model using latest Allwinner A31 CPU (quad-core Cortex A7 running at 1 GHz). The display on the Nexus 10 offers a resolution of 2560×1600 pixels, on the Onda V812 it’s just 1024×768. Playing 4K UHD on these screens won’t use the full display resolution as the video will be down-sampled to fit on the screen, but we found it interesting to have a look at the decoding capabilities of each device. 4K UHD video test details
Test conditions:The Nexus 10 tablet with Android build JOP40D / kernel 2012/11/06 and default video player (Google Play Movies v 2.3.7), the second video required MX Player application, version 1.7.10
The Onda V812 tablet with firmware and kernel dated 2012/12/27 and default Video Player “4K VideoPlayer” version 1.0.1

4K UHD play test video
Tested Video files specifications, as given by MediaInfo version 0.7.61:
The first test file is a 2160p video at 50 mbps, playing is almost smooth on the Onda V812 while the Nexus 10 is having hard times the video looking like a slide-show with just a few frames rendered every second.

The second test file is slow motion 2160p video at 120 mbps taken from a RED camera.
The Onda tablet does a lot of skipping while the Nexus barely can’t play it and just shows a series of pictures.
